Friday, November 8, 10 am – Noon: Trends in Child Sexual Abuse Response and Prevention

This 2-hour presentation will review our school-based presentation developed for 6th-12th graders with a focus on recent trends reported by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Maryland Children’s Alliance. Those who attend will be able to recognize warning signs of child sexual abuse, investigate the correlation between technology and child sexual abuse material and exploitation, and discuss best practices for reducing risk of harm.

Thursday, November 14, 9 – 11 am: Supporting Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse Through Legal Processes

This training is designed for therapists, particularly those working in outpatient settings outside of Child Advocacy Centers (CACs), who may face challenges when their clients undergo legal processes related to child sexual abuse (CSA). The session will address the lack of direct support and knowledge that non-CAC therapists often encounter, providing them with essential strategies to navigate the legal system effectively and support their clients ethically. Participants will gain insights into the differences between CAC and non-CAC settings, understand the critical points of legal proceedings, and learn how to prepare themselves and their clients for the challenges they may face.

Wednesday, November 20, 2:30-4:30 pm: Preventing Abuse and Protecting Athletes: Special Considerations for the Athletic Community

According to a 2021 study by Rhind et. al., 13% of athletes have experienced sexual abuse as a child in sport. As part of Change the Conversation’s prevention-based education, we aim to increase our audiences to include coaches, athletic directors, athletic trainers, officials, and additional individuals within the sport community to recognize signs and symptoms of abuse and promote best practices while also creating a safe environment for athletes to enjoy.
