Discuss recent cases in Frederick County and what professionals have learned about child sexual abuse cases. Attendees will (1) learn about recent cases that were prosecuted in Frederick County, (2) discuss what professionals have learned, and (3) consider areas where professionals have improved in their response to child sexual abuse.

Monday June 10, 3 – 4 pm Responding to Child Sexual Abuse: Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Enhance your response to child sexual abuse by learning about unique considerations for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Attendees will (1) review symptoms, factors, and reactions of child sexual abuse, (2) understand common characteristics and common co-occurring challenges among those with disabilities, (3) examine the intersection of child sexual abuse and those with disabilities, and (4) learn best practices to incorporate into your work with those with disabilities who have been impacted by child sexual abuse.

Friday June 21, 9 am – 2:30 pm Youth Mental Health First Aid
5.5 CEUs

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is an early intervention public education program. It teaches adults how to recognize the signs and symptoms that suggest a potential mental health challenge, how to listen nonjudgmentally, give reassurance to a youth who may be experiencing a mental health challenge, and refer a person to appropriate professional support and services. This 5.5-hour course is designed to teach people how to approach, assess, and assist a person who may be in the early stages of developing a mental health challenge. Please note: this training requires two hours of pre-course work be completed one week prior to the training date. Failure to complete this pre-course work will cancel your registration.

Tuesday July 9, 11 am – 1 pm Stewards of Children
2 CEUs

Stewards of Children® is an evidence-informed, award-winning two and a half hour training that teaches adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Through interviews with a very diverse group of people with lived experience, experts, and treatment providers, Stewards of Children® teaches adults practical actions they can take to reduce instances of child sexual abuse in their organizations, families, and communities.

Tuesday July 16, 10 am – noon Turn the Talk: Trends in the Field of Child Abuse Prevention
2 CEUs

This 2-hour presentation will review our school-based presentation developed for 6th-12th graders with a focus on recent trends reported by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Maryland Children’s Alliance. Those who attend will be able to recognize warning signs of child sexual abuse, investigate the correlation between technology and child sexual abuse material and exploitation, and discuss best practices for reducing risk of harm.

Tuesday July 30, 11 am – 2 pm Responding to Child Sexual Abuse: Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Enhance your response to child sexual abuse by learning about unique considerations for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Attendees will (1) review symptoms, factors, and reactions of child sexual abuse, (2) understand common characteristics and common co-occurring challenges among those with disabilities, (3) examine the intersection of child sexual abuse and those with disabilities, and (4) learn best practices to incorporate into your work with those with disabilities who have been impacted by child sexual abuse. Note: this training is an expanded version of the 1-hour training being held on June 10 and will include deeper discussions around the four learning objectives.

According to a 2021 study by Rhind et. al., 13% of athletes have experienced sexual abuse as a child in sport. As part of Change the Conversation’s prevention-based education, we aim to increase our audiences to include coaches, athletic directors, athletic trainers, officials, and additional individuals within the sport community to recognize signs and symptoms of abuse and promote best practices while also creating a safe environment for athletes to enjoy.

This session will assist parents. Professionals and educators in navigating the upcoming school season with confidence, positivity, and an approach grounded in strengths.
